John Perrotto tweets that the Pirates would like to bring lefty reliever Mike Gonzalez back to the Steel City, but the problem is that they'll have major competition for his services. This morning we learned that GM Neal Huntington was cleared to spend more by team president Frank Coonelly, though he was not given a hard number.

The 31-year-old Gonzalez spent the first four seasons of his big league career pitching in Pittsburgh, putting up a 2.37 ERA and a 10.6 K/9 during that time. He recently dropped his previous agent and signed on with Scott Boras.

I'd say that Karstens has a much higher ceiling than Jaku, as evidenced by some of those outings he had late last year where he was lights out. He went out and pitched 3 or 4 hitless innings at times.

Eh, I'm not sure I'd say that. Jaku had a better ERA, WHIP, K/9, BB/9, and
H/9 than Karstens did (granted, all of which isn't saying much). Still, he's
a slight improvement.

He might be a useful middle reliever or something. Basically he's Jeff
Karstens, but cheaper and under control for more years.

Oh, I understand. I get a feeling that most of these voters are working at old time newspapers and they're looking at stuff like Batting Average and RBI or Wins and ERA. They certainly aren't going to pay too much attention to something like WAR.

Don't get me wrong - I agree. I have very little doubt that McCutchen will
be more valuable than Coghlan in the long-run, and this doesn't "worry" me
about his future at all. The reasoning behind how they gave out the award is
what bothers me.

Last I checked Willie Stargell, Dave Parker, Roberto Clemente, Barry Bonds, Bobby Bonilla, Doug Drabek, Steve Blass, John Candelaria or most of the other great Pirates never won it. The only Pirate to win the award is Jason Bay and there's been a lot of Pirates in the last 60 years who were better than Jason Bay. Not worried about it. It's not a sprint, it's a marathon. Rookie of the Year is like handing out a prize to a guy who was ahead after 2 blocks in the Boston Marathon.

Timmy has worked his ....off!!!!! every game I have been @ AT&T park when Timmy has pitched...THIS IS TO THOSE WHO SELECT THE CY YOUNG OF 2009!!!!...with no runs on the board...or no support with power hitters...Timmy is able to hold a 1 run lead....but being human, he lost a game and could of with 3-4 runs many times he could have had many complete games...I am angry with the Giants for this abuse!!!!...more$$$ needs to leave greedy FAT CATS to buy hitters like JETER BABY..A ROD...and if Ricky Henderson was still playing, he would always get on base and like the Yankees these guys play basic baseball without abuse to the pitching staff.
